Wikileaks, Assange and the implications of Cablegate

From what I have learnt of wikileaks, Julian Assange seems to be the Moses of the internet era. He has successfully led the journalist sheep towards a place where they are challenging the definitions of the freedom of speech and that of the press. He has shown remarkable grit in publishing secrets from the diplomatic corridors of power in every nation including the big daddy-Uncle Sam. By doing this, he has ruffled more than a few feathers and created a furore among the high and mighty US and its cronies - France , UK and many other nations. From his talks on TED, he comes across as an extremely well-spoken , articulate person in full command of his faculties and as brilliant as they come. It is such a person that Wikileaks,in its capacity as the internet whistleblower . needs at its helm. A person who will not refrain from asserting himself, even when push-comes to shove(where the pushers include the US). He is the rightful contender for the person of the year, nay the decade, if nothing but for showing the world at large what a person who plants a seed of supervision can do improve the notion of social justice in the world. In his own words, in an interview to the Hindu, he expresses his motivation as " wanting to be happy, hence wanting to make the world more just." It is difficult to comprehend the power that the tree Wikileaks has grown into possesses currently , its shadow encompassing nations , their regimes, dictators , democracies, politicians , en masse. A few of the revelations of Wikileaks in the Indian scenario were 1. The cash for votes before a parliamentary vote of confidencein 2008. 2. The cash for votes scam in Tamil Nadu 3. The opportunistic Hindutva of the BJP 4. The US questioning the appointment of Pranab M, and its implications., etc. This is just the tip of the global iceberg, where whole regimes have fallen because of the mighty leaks. The kenyan government, the tunisian rebellion, the Libyan and Egyptian revolutions are just some of the examples of what an organisation can do when it is focussed on removing secrecy and exposing the true nature of relationships between nations , its allies and its antagonists. Nations have come out against the organisation and the man himself. He has been implicated in sexual offences and Sweden is requesting to extradite him. Leaders have questioned his credibility, some even without bothering to investigate the veracity of the leaks, the most notable , being our own honorable Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. Meanwhile , it is no bed of roses for the organisation- whose financial aid has been cut off by the first world banks, which are under pressure from the powers that be in Washington. It is incredible then, that while walking this path of fire, Julian is still analysing the global scenario comprehensively, keeping a mental database of the happenings in nations ranging from Sweden to India to Trinad and Tobago to Afghanistan. It speaks volumes of his nonchalance and courage to face situations-come what may(in this case a life sentence for Sexual offences). He speaks of his dreams with pride at being able to realise them in the form of Wikileaks, and why should he not? He has , as the editor of Hindu puts it, ironically put himself in the unenviable position of showering light over diplomatic darkness , while himself remaining shrouded in secrecy.
